The Sound of Muzak

The new Porcupine Tree album, In Absentia, features one of the strongest drum performances I’ve heard in months. Gavin Harrison’s playing is fresh, innovative, and beautifully recorded. Check out the groove from The Sound of Muzak:

        1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 +
7 HH x x x x x x o
- SD o o o o
4 KD o o o o o o o o
It's in seven, with a half-time feel on the ride hand and unexpected accents throughout. I've made MP3 samples of both the groove (as performed by QuickTime) and the original song, so you can hear the drum track in isolation as well as in context. There's a snare riff on the + of 6 in the first two bars of the song (and intermittently thereafter). I didn't transcribe it, but it's three 32nd notes if my math is right. You'll hear it in the excerpt below.
